We welcome new Farmers to the Downtown Salmon Arm Farmers Market : the Anderson Family!

Brittany and her husband, Caleb, moved to their farm in Malakwa in 2021. With a background in biology and forestry, respectively, they were ready to dive into farming with the goal of producing nourishing food using practices that support the health of the land and the community.

The property was originally a berry farm, with areas used for cattle grazing, though it had been at least a decade since any animals were on the land. When Brittany and Caleb got the farm, the soil was dry and compact; past overgrazing could have contributed to this. To help regenerate the land, they have been working to put animals back on the land.

The animals can eat back the weeds and allow forage plants to reestablish themselves. Livestock will also add nutrients back into the soil through their manure. They have sheep, pigs, chickens, turkeys, horses and a mule.

They broke ground on their market garden this spring and are ready to fully dive into vegetable growing while also looking after the berries that came with the land.

This is Anderson Family Farm’s first year with us at Market and their first year at any market. You can buy a share of their farm’s harvest and pick up your Community Supported Agriculture box at the market.
