Local Food Support

SD83 Family Food Box

Our family box program is a partnership with School District 83’s Indigenous Education Department to identify and support families needing assistance with a monthly box of nutritious foods.

Our Family Food box is full for this year but may have opening next year. Do you have a child in SD 83? If so, I would connect with their school food coordinator, Serena at scaner@sd83.bc.ca

Everyone has the right to food that supports health and well being. Our boxes are filled with fresh, locally sourced food that supports our farmers, families and the environment!

In 2023, our boxes contributed well over $80,000 directly into the pockets of local farmers and food producers, and helped build capacity for our local food system.

Shuswap Area - Family Food Support

There are a few different opportunities for food support in our community. If you live in Salmon Arm, here are some options:
  1. The Good Food Box- monthly box of vegetables and fruit for $20 (about $40 value). Joyce is the coordinator and you need to pay by the second Wednesday of each month (cash or e-transfer) and pick up at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on the third Thursday of each month: joycehenderson1938@gmail.com
  2. Shuswap Food Action also has a community teaching garden where volunteers are welcome to harvest and take home food for their families (Shuswap Community Teaching Garden – Shuswap Food Action Society)
  3. The BC Farmer’s Market Nutrition Coupon program is now open. The community contact (depending on where you live) for that in Salmon Arm the Shuswap Family Centre, The Shuswap Family Centre (familyresource.bc.ca), you have to go in in-person to register and would also have to go there every 2 weeks to pick up your coupons ($54 every 2 weeks). They are only open Mon-Thurs, so I know this isn’t super convenient. They also are almost full, so I would go asap, if this option is appealing to you. If you live in Sorrento/Blind Bay, the program runs through  Copper Island Health & Wellness Centre (Sandy Reutlinger, sshssprograms@gmail.com)

Other emergency food options:
  1. The Lighthouse (441 3 Street SW )- family food hampers; call to sign up. Drop-in food bank 9-12pm and 1-2pm Monday to Friday. In the summer, they have an “Everyone welcome to harvest” food forest.
